ABOUT IYENGAR YOGA
Developed by B.K.S. Iyengar in India, this is a system of yoga which is practised at a slow pace. B.K.S. Iyengar’s book, Light on Yoga was published in 1966 and became a classic reference book for modern postural yoga. Time is spent in each asana (pose) while it is explored and a precise alignment of the body is focussed on. Supports eg, bolsters, blocks, chairs etc. are often used, to assist students to access the posture and to work in it without injuring themselves.
Iyengar yoga teachers have to complete a rigorous two year mentorship to become introductory teachers. In order to be accepted on to the teacher training programme students need to have been attending Iyengar yoga classes for a minimum of 3 years, to be competent in the basic asanas and have a good understanding of the yoga system.
